I added a new forum so people can chat about Grossinger's or anything else! It's still new, so there will probably be some upcoming changes as I work on the colors and other little things! If you have any problems with anything or notice any bugs, please e-mail me and let me know!
Enjoy!

My wife and I moved to the Binghamton, N.Y., area in the late 1990s from Ohio. We had not visited the Catskills before moving to this area. One of our long-time interests has been exploring the smaller communities around the cities where we have lived (we've lived in five states). We also collect picture postcards from these areas and sell the duplicates. We have been fascinated by the resorts of the Catskills area. It is so sad that new uses have not been found for them.

I was an intern assistant golf professional there in 1994 when the Min family owned the place - lived in a white house at the top of a hill (think there were 4 houses in a row - mine was the top house). I was just 20 at the time, but I loved exploring around the grounds at that time. I love the site - and I love reading about all of the beautiful memories people have of the place - ever since working there on a complete whim in college for 8 months or so, I've been fascinated with the history of Grossingers. The pictures of the paychecks from 1994 are creepy to me (as is the skeleton picture - what's with that?) as the dates were from Nov 1994 - when I left there!

Keep up the great work Joe!

my dad , meyer lerner worked at grossingers for 40 years! i have so many fond memories as well growing up there, going to there lake and day camp, babysitting was so much fun too and i used to work in the skate house and part time cocktail waitress.

barb:
i also wanted to add that my dad met my mom in grossingers..he was a bellhop and my mom worked as a switchboard operator so thanks to grossingers or i wouldnt be here today!! ha!i miss it so so much. I graduated high school with mitchell etess

Marc Wallack:
I remember Meyer very well as he was always the first to greet us and the man who helped us pack up the car once we got it back form the famed traffic desk when we departed. Meyer was the only person that my parents checked in to the G with for over 20 years and to us he was among the many special people we came to know there. Dave Kaplan and his wife Eileen taught me how to ski and ride a rug down the ski hill. I grew up in day camp and spent my teen years at the night watch. What fun ,what a wonderful group of people and guests. One of my dreams was to find a way to revive the place and I looked at the hotel and met with Bernie Roth when it was up for auction 10 years ago. Sadly the economic viability for a family resort that delivered what the Grossinger Family accomplished with such grace and generosity will most likely never be seen again. I knew every inch of that hotel and as I walked around what remained it was just a shell full of memories. The entire Grossinger family of workers, owners and guests is what made that place so special and your father Meyer was a stand out.

This is a great site and I look at it from time to time and cherish all the great memories. Please keep up the great work Joe.
Thanks
Marc Wallack

Bill Whalen:
Barb, I remember your dad! I worked with him at the service desk. Meyer knew EVERYONE -- he was a favorite of many guests, they would ask for him -- he was more than a bellman, he was a host! He "owned" the card room. Me? I was the shabbos goy.

If anyone has any pics from Grossinger's from the 50's and 60's, it would be most appreciated. My dad was the Rabbi there for the Passover Seders. He passed away in 1966, so if you have any pictures, I would cherish them. Thanks.

This is a great yet very sad website. Do you have any more photos of when the place was open pre 80's?

Joe (site owner):
I'm sorry, I do not. I'm always on the lookout for old pictures though. They are hard to come by!

In 1983,at age 19, I worked at Grossingers in Reception and Front Desk Reservations. I met some of the best people and have so many fond memories of this place! It was my first time away from home and I enjoyed every minute of it....a little too much, because I ended up getting fired for tipping a golf cart over in Grossinger lake one night! LOL! Good thing I grew up! I had gone to Grossinger for my Class of 1981 Field Trip and decided it would be a fun place to work. It was the coolest place ever and it makes me sad to see it no longer operating.

I check in here every year or so. Tracy and I worked in the dining room. I worked from 79 to 85 Tracy from 83 to 85. Lots of couples met at Grossingers', guests and employees. The lucky people that worked there know what the guests never could about how wonderful it really was. We were treated like part of the larger family and had access to the good parts the guests never did.
On a seperate note, Dennis V. went to photography school in RI and came back and did a photo project of the dining room and kitchen operation in 80 or 81, anyone who knows where he is might ask him about them. His sister was a waitress, I forget her name..

I grew up in Liberty and like everyone else on the site have many fond memories. I learned how to ice skate, downhill ski and swim at Grossinger's. I particularly remember the incredible indoor pool and how privileged I felt to go there once a week in the dead of winter for swimming lessons. The high diving board was one of a kind and so thrilling. I also remember the rope tow for the ski hill. My parents as well loved Grossinger's and always raved about the entertainment. I recall them being absolutely heartbroken when the resort closed.

I worked in a store in the lower lobby in the summer of 1972, and Thanksgiving weekend of 1972 just after Jennie had passed away. I knew Grossingers had closed in 1985 and that Paul had passed away not long after, but I was under the impression that it was going to be developed into condos and townhouses. While this was upsetting, of all places-- Grossingers--such a magnificent resort with so much history closing, I thought, well, at least some of will be utilized such as that incredible indoor pool that I used as well as the saunas every day I was there. Seeing that 24 years have gone by with it just rotting into ruins has made me cry. What a tragic waste. I was so disturbed by the photos I saw, that I immediately located Sampson D. Sanger, the portrait drawing artist who for many years had his easel set up outside the night club entrance and I had befriended that summer when I was only 14. Thankfully, he is alive and well, and the only person I know who can commiserate over the great loss of such a wonderful place. The end of an era, and such an irreverent demise.

Anyone who spent time at Grossinger's (or had never had the privilege to do so)should read Tania Grossinger's delightful memoir, Growing Up at Grossinger's, about her lengthy sojourn at the late great resort during its heyday.

Hello to some of you whose names I vaguely remember. I am the author of "Growing Up at Grossinger's" (Skyhorse Publishing, 2008) which I think many of you will find of interest. I grew up at the hotel primarily from 1945-1960 but returned periodically thereafter. My mother was Karla Grossinger, the social hostess who introduced lot of people to each other (maybe even you!).
The book has many photos, including one of the original Grossinger farmhouse dating back to 1915. My website, taniagrossinger.com has even more.
Enjoy!
all best,
Tania G.

Timshel:
I loved your book and highly recommend it.

I was a member of the 1963 University of Michigan Diving Team. We trained for the 1964 Olypmpic Trials at Grossinger's the summer of 1963. At the time there were few ten meter diving towers, so we built one from painter's scaffolding topped with plywood and cocoa matting. Our "jobs" that summer were to referee volleyball matches for the guests on a Tarmac court next to the pool. Often we not only refereed matches but managed blood pressures as some of the guests took the games very seriously.

Dear All,
I'm a writer living in San Francisco who is in the early stages of a book project, and I would love to speak with any/all past patrons, residents, and family members of the Grossinger's Resort. I have been to Grossinger's as well, but sadly after it had gone through decline.

I'm particularly interested in your memories and stories, but I will also need more detailed input in regards to the locations of all described rooms (pink elephant lounge, main dining lounge, utility tunnels, etc.)

This will be a very detailed historic look at the G, and I hope to share it with you all when it's complete. Let's get started. Email me: editor@terrastories.com , or you can contact me through this guestbook. I'd like to hear from anyone - especially the family, because I want to have the story of the hotel's early beginnings, back in the Progressive Era.

Cheers,
Jonathan H.

What grand memories of Grossinger's. I worked there from 1982-85 as a camp counselor with Elaine Daitz what a wonderful lady, she taught me so much. I remember working with Tom, Georgette,Debbie, Audra, Gorden, Jeff Suzie, Cathine the Hostess from the Dining Room and of course Millzee. Joe, your photos break my heart, but I thank you. I really would love to go there one more time and see the Olde Gal.
Jennifer Grossinger remember me, I called you Smurfette and we always had great fun. You even gave me one of your cats, kittens in the summer of 1984.
I would love to hear from any of you guys. Jeff remember the summer we had the cabin and all the cheap beer bottles we returned for the nickles. This was a wonderful time for me meeting new friends, living on my own and working the BEST job i ever had.
